Kalshi is the prediction market: a CFTC-regulated exchange where members trade contracts that pay $1.00 if they win, against each other, for a fee set by a published formula. DraftKings is a sportsbook, which in the words of Kalshi's FAQ "takes the other side of every bet from customers", with its cost built into the odds. On four NFL games from October 11 to 15, 2026, Kalshi's close sat 0.5 to 2.9 points from DraftKings' closing price (implied, vig included), under one point on two of them. Which costs less depends on the price level and the book.
Kalshi vs DraftKings: the short version
- Kalshi fits if you want an exchange where another member takes the other side, a fee printed by formula, and every trade "published publicly through our API" (Kalshi FAQ).
- A sportsbook fits if you want one price with the cost built in and no separate fee line: the house model Kalshi's FAQ describes.
- Check first. Kalshi says lawful access is "your individual responsibility".

Exchange vs house: who is on the other side
Kalshi's FAQ draws the line itself: "Unlike a sportsbook, which takes the other side of every bet from customers, Kalshi is an exchange where people on both sides of trades can meet". That is Kalshi's framing of sportsbooks in general.
On the exchange side, KalshiEX, LLC is "a U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission ("CFTC") designated contract market ("DCM")" (Member Agreement, October 1, 2026), designated on November 4, 2020 (CFTC press release 8302-20). Our guide to whether Kalshi is legit covers what that designation does and does not mean.
A Kalshi NFL game contract pays $1.00 if its outcome happens, and its price in cents reads as a probability: Denver at 0.44 is a 44% price. A sportsbook quotes American odds, and the probability has to be backed out with the vig still inside.
What you pay
Kalshi's fee schedule, "Last updated and effective: July 7, 2026", publishes two formulas, quoted as written:
Taker: fees = round up(M x 0.07 x C x P x (1-P))
M = the multiplier for each contract (default is 1 unless otherwise indicated)
Maker: fees = round up(M x 0.0175 x C x P x (1-P))
M = the multiplier for each contract (default is 0 unless otherwise indicated)
P = the price of a contract in dollars (50 cents is 0.5)
C = the number of contracts being traded
round up = rounds up such that the fee + positionCost is rounded to a centicent
Taker fees apply only to "orders that are immediately matched with orders sitting on the orderbook." Kalshi's own table: 100 contracts at $0.50 pay $1.75, so $50 of contracts costs $1.75 in fees and pays $100 if it wins; the fee is largest at $0.50 and falls to $0.07 per 100 contracts at $0.01 or $0.99; "There is no settlement fee." As a share of the stake the fee is 0.07 x (1 - P): 6.3% at $0.10, 3.5% at $0.50, 0.7% at $0.90 (our calculation). Kalshi's fee page (October 16, 2026) lists NFL Game (KXNFLGAME), Pro Football Spread and Pro Football Total Points with maker fees at multiplier 1 (taker $0.07 to $1.75, maker $0.02 to $0.44 per 100 contracts), and "No upcoming fee changes scheduled."
A sportsbook shows no separate fee; its cost is the vig in the price. On a pre-game snapshot of Texans at Jaguars (October 16, 2026, 18:04 UTC, not a close), DraftKings had Houston +124 (100 / 224 = 44.64%) and Jacksonville -148 (148 / 248 = 59.68%): 104.32%, a 4.32% two-sided overround (our calculation). The same sum gives Pinnacle 2.88%, BetOnline and Bovada 3.63%, FanDuel 4.13%, Fanatics 4.44% and BetMGM 4.64%, so DraftKings was fifth-lowest of seven. Line Shopping shows that board for every game; our vig explainer covers the method.
The 4.32% and Kalshi's 3.5% are different units (a two-sided overround on one board, a fee as a share of stake at one price), so neither subtracts from the other; the like-for-like test is one outcome, one payout.
$100 back on Denver at the October 15, 2026 close
Seahawks at Broncos, Denver to win: Kalshi closed at 0.44, the devigged book consensus at 0.435 (a fair $43.50). These are stored closing probabilities, not guaranteed fills.
| Venue and order | Price | Fee | Outlay for $100 back | Over fair ($43.50) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kalshi, taker | 0.44 | $1.7248 ($1.73 on a cent display) | $45.72 to $45.73 | $2.22 |
| Kalshi, maker | 0.44 | $0.4312 | about $44.43 | about $0.93 |
| DraftKings | +130 | in the price | $43.48 | about -$0.02 |
| No-vig consensus | 0.435 | none | $43.50 | $0.00 |
DraftKings was the cheapest of five books on Denver here; three days earlier its -185 on the Rams tied Bovada as the costliest. One game, one side: another price or book reorders the table (worked step by step in our Kalshi and Polymarket fee math).
Do the prices differ? Same NFL games, both venues
GhostLeg stores DraftKings' closing price beside Kalshi's close. Home side, at the close:
| Game | DraftKings | DraftKings implied (vig in) | Kalshi | Gap (points) | Final |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seahawks at Broncos, Oct 15 | Broncos +130 | 43.5% | 44% | 0.5 | Denver 17-14 |
| Bills at Rams, Oct 12 | Rams -185 | 64.9% | 62% | 2.9 | Buffalo 37-34 |
| Ravens at Falcons, Oct 11 | Falcons -175 | 63.6% | 63% | 0.6 | Baltimore 30-23 |
| 49ers at Seahawks, Oct 11 | Seahawks -166 | 62.4% | 61% | 1.4 | San Francisco 32-29 |
On these four games, Kalshi's close sat 0.5 to 2.9 points from DraftKings' closing price (implied, vig included), under one point on two of them. The DraftKings figures are one side only, with its vig still inside (our calculation). Every venue made the Rams the favorite, and Buffalo won 37-34: a price is not a promise.
Against the devigged book consensus, not DraftKings alone, Kalshi sat 0.5 to 3.0 points away on all eight NFL games we stored for October 11 to 15 (widest: Rams 0.62 vs 0.649, Chargers 0.37 vs 0.400). On the Broncos, Kalshi (0.44), the books (0.435) and Polymarket (0.435) sat within half a point, and the 44% side won.
Over 30 days the comparison is Kalshi against that consensus. To October 16, 2026 (two-way moneylines, 425 games; EPL and MLS excluded as three-way), Kalshi's close averaged 2.5 points from it: WNBA 4.7, NFL 1.8, NHL 2.6, MLB 1.6, UFC 5.3. Brier scores (lower is closer to the result): Kalshi 0.2220 against the books' 0.2289 pooled, 0.2335 against 0.2348 in the NFL. Which venue landed closer split near even (NFL 50.0% to 50.0%). Neither venue is reliably sharper than the books over 30 days; that is a fact about the venues, not a GhostLeg accuracy claim.
The Signal Board prints these gaps game by game; the paired closes are headed for GhostLeg's Data API, coming soon.
How Kalshi settles a game
Kalshi's help centre: "A market settles when the official outcome is confirmed and our markets team finalizes the result." Most markets settle within about 3 hours, and winning contracts "are paid out to your cash balance."
The NFL game contract (filed with the CFTC February 13, 2026) pays "$1.00" on "the official final result", overtime included, "no later than the day after the Expiration Date, unless the Market Outcome is under review pursuant to Rule 7.1". A tie pays $1/(the number of tied teams), rounded down: $0.50 a team at 20-20. Under Rule 7.1 (Rulebook v1.29, August 17, 2026), a final outcome is due "within a 24 hour period" of a review starting.
DraftKings' settlement and grading rules: not covered here.
Age, identity and where you can use them
Kalshi's FAQ table lists the minimum age to register and participate as "21+" for sportsbooks and "18+" for Kalshi; its sign-up article says "Be 18 years or older". Its Member Agreement (October 1, 2026) has each member represent "You are of the age of majority in Your state of residence", and its help centre makes lawful access "your individual responsibility". The FAQ table also lists SSN (in whole or in part), phone, government ID, address and date of birth. DraftKings' age policy and identity checks: not covered here.
Kalshi's FAQ says that because it "works like the stock market rather than a casino, it's regulated by the CFTC and federal law", and that "we're subject to federal - not state - laws and regulations." That is Kalshi's position, not settled law.
On August 28, 2026, in KalshiEX, LLC v. Assad et al. (Ninth Circuit No. 25-7516), a case against Nevada gaming regulators, the court's summary reads: "The panel held that the district court did not abuse its discretion in dissolving the preliminary injunction because Kalshi did not show a likelihood that the CEA preempts state gaming regulations as applied to its sports event contracts." The panel "affirmed in part ... and remanded in part".
Kalshi's Member Agreement names only countries as Restricted Jurisdictions, and its iOS App Store listing says "Kalshi products are not available in all jurisdictions." No Kalshi page we read on October 16, 2026 lists US states, so we print none. DraftKings' availability: not covered here.
What a sportsbook does that Kalshi does not
- No separate fee line. The cost is in the price, so the odds on screen are the whole cost.
- On one side, it cost less. On Denver at the October 15 close, DraftKings' +130 bought $100 back for $43.48, against $45.72 to $45.73 as a Kalshi taker (our calculation, one game, one side).
What Kalshi does that a sportsbook does not
- Public trade data. Kalshi sends every trade to the CFTC, and "every trade is published publicly through our API."
- Resting orders cost less, or nothing. A resting order pays the maker rate of 0.0175, a quarter of the taker rate, on series listed with maker fees, and zero elsewhere; cancelling is free.
Both kinds of price sit side by side on GhostLeg's Signal Board (seven sportsbooks, Kalshi and Polymarket); Line Shopping compares the books, ungated; our market data API is coming soon. GhostLeg Pro is $19.99 a month, the first few games on each board are free, and there is a free trial.
