What Does Parlay Mean in Betting: The Clean Definition
A parlay, sometimes called an accumulator or multi, works like compound interest in reverse. You stake money on Outcome A. If it wins, the proceeds (your stake plus the payout) roll into Outcome B. Win that, and the full amount rolls into Outcome C. Continue until all legs are settled.
If every leg wins, your original stake has been multiplied by each leg's odds. If a single leg loses, the entire ticket is dead. There's no partial credit. No "3 out of 4 ain't bad." One loss and you're back to zero.
The allure is the payout. Four reasonable favorites, each close to even money, combine into a ticket that might pay +1000 or better. A $20 bet suddenly has a shot at $200+. That's the lottery-ticket pull that makes parlays the best-selling product at every major sportsbook.

The Single-Bet Baseline: How the Book Builds Its Edge

When a sportsbook posts -110/-110 on a spread or total, the implied probability of each side is:

Both sides at 52.38% adds to 104.76%. True probability must sum to 100%. That extra 4.76% is the overround: the book's built-in profit margin on a perfectly balanced market.
Expressed differently: for every dollar of true expected value in a -110 bet, you're paying $1.0476 at retail. The book keeps 4.54 cents of every dollar in handle on a perfectly balanced -110 market. That's the single-bet tax.
It's a small toll per bet. Across thousands of bets, it compounds into a grinding edge for the house. But single bets at -110? That's actually the most bettor-friendly market at a retail book. Parlays are a different story.

Step 1: What Fair Parlay Odds Would Look Like
To find the fair combined probability, multiply each leg's true win probability together. We'll use the implied-probability figures above (note: these still include vig, so we're slightly overstating the book's edge; the real compounding is even worse if you devig first):

Step 2: What the Book Actually Pays
The sportsbook calculates parlay payouts by multiplying the decimal odds of each leg:
Yankees ML -131 → decimal 1.763
Over 9 runs -111 → decimal 1.901
Phillies ML -126 → decimal 1.794
Over 7.5 runs -102 → decimal 1.980
Combined: 1.763 × 1.901 × 1.794 × 1.980 = 11.91

Wait. That's basically the same number as the fair-value calculation above. Doesn't that mean the book isn't taking extra edge on parlays?
Here's the sleight of hand: each decimal odd already has the single-leg vig baked in. The book isn't applying an extra parlay tax on top; they're compounding the existing single-leg vig across all four legs simultaneously, and that compounding is the mechanism.
Step 3: The Compounding Vig Math
Think of it this way. Each single bet at a standard retail line costs you approximately 4.54 cents of edge per dollar wagered. When you chain four of them together, those edges don't add. They multiply.
For each leg priced at standard -110 (the round-number illustration), your "value survival rate" per leg is:
95.46 cents of value per dollar → 1 - 0.0454 = 0.9546
Four legs stacked:
0.9546 × 0.9546 × 0.9546 × 0.9546 = 0.831
The parlay ticket starts life with only 83.1 cents of value per dollar wagered. The book's effective hold on a 4-leg parlay at standard prices is 16.9%, nearly four times the 4.54% on a single bet.

Even with a couple of tight lines on the totals, this ticket starts with only 86.1 cents of expected value per dollar staked before a single game is played. That's a 13.9% book hold, compared with 4.54% if you had placed any one of those four bets individually.

What Our Signals Show

The Phillies-Padres total was the tightest of the four legs: the over/under 7.5 was priced at -102 on DraftKings and essentially even on BetMGM (+100), a 1% overround that's unusually tight for a retail book. If there's any single leg in this parlay that approaches fair value, it's that one.
But here's the problem: the fact that one leg has tight pricing doesn't rescue the parlay. The three other legs with standard vig have already dragged the ticket's expected value down to 86 cents on the dollar before that fourth leg even factors in. You can't parlay your way to positive expected value when three of your legs are running at a 4-5% book edge.

Why Sportsbooks Push Parlays So Aggressively
A single -110 bet at a balanced book nets the house roughly 4.5% in the long run. A 4-leg parlay at those same prices nets them closer to 17%. The bettor is still getting a "fair" multiplier, since the parlay pays what the math says it should at those odds. But the odds themselves were set with retail vig already embedded, and compounding retail vig across four legs is the most profitable structure in the sportsbook's entire product catalog.
This is why DraftKings sends push notifications about "Parlay Boosts." It's why FanDuel's home screen features a parlay builder above the fold. From a margin-per-dollar-wagered perspective, nothing in sports betting comes close to parlays.
The book also benefits from bettor psychology. Because the individual selections look like confident picks, bettors feel they're making a skilled decision rather than accepting an unfavorable bet. Four "smart" picks strung together feels like an investment, but the numbers work against them just the same.

The Reverse Line Movement Test
There's one case where a parlay can be more defensible: when you're building it around legs that the market prices inefficiently. How to Use Parlays Without Getting Crushed
None of this means parlays are never worth placing. Here's where GhostLeg's honest take lands:
2-leg parlays reduce the compounding damage. Two standard -110 legs compound to roughly 9% book hold vs 4.5%. Still worse than singles, but half as bad as four legs. If you're going to parlay, keep it short.
Use parlays as entertainment with bounded stakes. The lottery-ticket structure is genuinely fun. Treat a 3-4 leg parlay like a movie ticket, a defined entertainment budget, not a profit strategy.
